Two Sides of the Argument for Cape Wind
Pro Side:
The wind farm
that is currently opposed will provide locally (domestic and not imported)
produced power to three quarters of the demand of Cape Cod. This
will be a huge shift away from the current dependence on fossil fuels.
The National Environmental Policy Act issued a statement, that states that the construction of 130
large wind turbines will cause hardly any environmental impact. There are no major fisheries in danger. Actually there will
be a reduction in fossil fuel pollution from the production of more wind generated power. There is an urgent need and no other
national plan beyond drilling and expanding dependence on foreign sources. This is something that we can implement now.
Con Side:
The project is
expensive. There has been some opposition the level of “transparency”
in the DEIS (Draft Environmental Impact Statement). Some people claim that it is impossible to their validate conclusions
or provide detailed quantitative information that would allow for independent assessment. Some people object that the majority
of people still do not agree with the project, citing a recent poll in which all of the people did not live directly on the
edge of the Cape. Another big aspect of the opposition is that it would
destroy the beauty of their oceans, and their “world famous virgin beaches.” This is a major concern.
